Bernese Mountain Dog

Bernese Mountain Dog: Breed specifications

Country of Origin:
Switzerland
Size:
58 - 70 cm (22.75 - 27.5 inches).
Coat:
Hair is medium-length, straight to slightly curly, with a thick undercoat. Color is almost totally black with rust and white markings.
Character:
This breed is friendly, vigilant, and very loyal to its family. It is intelligent, attentive, calm, and seldom barks without a good reason.
Temperament:
Bernese Mountain Dogs are great with children and will protect them. Provided proper socialization has taken place, they get along fine with cats and other household pets. They will announce unfamiliar visitors with hearty barking and then carefully watch them. They have been known to be dominant toward others of their own breed.
Care:
Regular grooming with a brush and comb is required, particularly in areas that are prone to tangles (behind the years, neck, legs, behind the ears, and hindquarters). Excessive hair around the pads of the feet must be trimmed and the ears must be kept clean.
Training:
The handler must adopt a loving, consistent approach and stay on an even keel. The Bernese Mountain Dog is an eager learner and is very responsive to its trainer's voice.
Activity:
This breed must be taken out regularly because it is very fond of exercise. It loves to run and play off the leash whenever possible. Avoid strenuous exercise when the dog is young, as it needs all of its energy to build strong bones and joints and put on weight.
